Doc Watson, the blind guitarist and folk musician famous for his finger-picking techniques and Americana style, died on Tuesday afternoon, May 29. He was 89.
Watson had fallen ill in recent weeks, undergoing colon surgery on Thursday, May 24 after a fall in his home the previous Monday. He died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., says a rep for the musician.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, his daughter Nancy Ellen, two grandchildren, multiple great-grandchildren and his brother David, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"Watson's immense talent and spirit will be deeply missed, and our sincerest sympathies go out to his family, friends and all who were inspired by his music," Neil Portnow, president/CEO of The Recording Academy, says in a statement.
Asked how he would like to be remembered after death, Watson said in 2002, "Just as a good old, down-to-earth boy that didn't think he was perfect and that loved music. And I'd like to leave quite a few friends behind.... Other than that, I don't want anybody putting me on a pedestal when I leave here. I'm just one of the people."
